How it runs

  • Pool play followed by single-elimination finals (finals only if there are enough teams in your age group). The finals format for each age group is shown on its draw.
  • There may be further pool games the next day — please check the draw.
  • Games are best of 3 sets, full scoring to 21, 21, 15 (win by 2).
  • Times on the draw are earliest start times. If a court is running behind, the next match starts within 5 minutes of the previous one finishing — be warmed up and ready.
  • Search your name at the top of any draw page to highlight your games and duties.
  • Court numbers are shown on the draw. They’re unlikely to change, but please check your draw again the day before your event.
  • A physiotherapist will be available Monday/Wednesday: cost is $30 for 15 mins.
  • First aid and sports medicine are onsite 8am to 4.30pm daily.
  • We play according to the FIVB Beach Volleyball Rules: FIVB Beach Volleyball Rules 2025–2028 (PDF).

Pool Play & Finals Format

Every age group starts with round-robin pool play. The finals you play depend on how many teams entered your age group and if your competition is one day or two. Find your event and age group below.

Duty teams

  • Teams complete duties. Official referees are used for medal matches where possible and available.
  • Duty teams provide the 1st ref and 2nd ref/scorer — please fill the scoresheet out correctly.
  • First-round duty teams: collect the score sheets, scoreboard and a match ball from the Competition Tent before heading to your court. We pack up each night, so this happens every morning. See the First games page to check if your team is on first-round duty each day.
  • Check the draw thoroughly — you may be needed for duties after you’ve finished playing for the day. We try to avoid it and appreciate your help.

Please ask the names (or team codes) of both teams you’re dutying. As a minimum, the scoresheet needs:

  • Division (including gender and age)
  • Court number
  • Team code
  • Set score for each set
  • Overall winner of the game

Special rules

  • 60+ & 65+ Pairs: teams may list 3 players and rotate at any time, or play as a team of 3.
  • Fours (Men’s, Women’s & Mixed): teams may list 5 players and rotate at any time.
  • Mixed 4s: a maximum of two males on court at any time.
  • Mixed 4s: if a team uses two or three contacts, both genders must touch the ball — otherwise it’s a fault.
